The preliminary course in design imparts a broad, non-vocational basic training in design. It is an initial year in which creative awareness is awakened and students are guided towards their own design solutions. It is also an orientation year to clarify talents and inclinations for finding a profession. The preliminary course is a recommended prerequisite for training in a design profession: vocational design apprenticeships, graphic design classes at the St. Gall School of Design, specialist classes at other design schools in Switzerland.

In this course, creative talents such as ADs, graphic designers, copywriters and digital designers are taught the theoretical and practical tools they need, from strategy to idea generation and evaluation to media-appropriate implementation in a wide variety of channels. The lecturers included industry giants such as Peter Brönnimann, Livio Dainese (Chief Creative Officer and Co-CEO Wirz Communications) and Philipp Skrabal, (Partner, Member of the Management Board, Chief Creative Officer at Farner) to name a few.
